Why Dance? By Ji Wei
There are a probably a hundred and one reasons why people learn to dance, but let me share with you what I think are the key benefits.
During the course of learning dancing, you get numerous opportunities to meet people of the opposite sex. You will never need match making sessions arrange by your parents, blind dates or any other events organized by the Social Development Unit, or other match making organizations. When you learn how to dance, it becomes nearly effortless. You will be astounded at how easy you will begin to meet singles. Girls will literally be swarming to dance with you – Believe it.
------------------------------------------------------------------- Ladies love to dance with men who can lead well; Guys love to dance with girls who can follow their lead. -------------------------------------------------------------------
The ability to dance allows you to score more points in the eyes of your friends. Regardless of your occupation, as long as you can execute dance moves with precision and look impressive, people will think of you differently.
Dancing is the probably fastest way to correct your body posture; when you see look in the mirror and see this image which is hunching all the time you simply can’t wait to change it. Some people live their entire lives oblivious of the fact that they are walking with a hunch. Dancing rectifies your posture and makes you appear more confident in front of colleagues and superiors.
------------------------------------------------------------------- Raising your shoulder and chest by merely 2 centimeters will boost your confidence by more than you can imagine.
Only when I consciously remind myself to correct my posture I began to notice all those people who live without knowing that they walk with a terribly ugly hunch. -------------------------------------------------------------------
Many people fail to lose weight as they lack the motivation. As a result, they discontinue their diet programme or exercise regime after a few days. This is because the short term pain is too intense that drives them to give up on the long term pleasure. In dances which requires partners like salsa or tango, you will feel the pressure to look good in front of the people whom are dancing with and you will be motivated to lose weight. In addition, the pain factor is less intense as dancing is more enjoyable compared to working out in a gym or running on a treadmill. Secondly, dancing requires you to move rather quickly. It allows people to burn calories, without the negative effects that arises from high impact exercises like running. More details about the benefits of losing weight by dancing can be obtained at

For most people, after a long hard day at work, they would most probably go home, and do one of more of the following activities – read, watch TV, surf the Internet. Picking up dancing would be a splendid way to introduce some variety into one’s life.
Dancing is one of the fastest way to relieve stress. For those who have heard of the term Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) will probably understand this better. When one feels angry, one will probably breathe faster, and his heart will probably beat faster. Similarly a person who is feeling down will probably walk with a slouch, or dragging his feet. Our physiology and our state of the mind are inter-related. One can eliminate stress by simply interrupting this pattern. Dancing changes your physiology instantly by making you move in quick steps in sync with melodious music. Dancing interrupts the original physiology and allows the person to adopt a physiology which projects a happy image. This encourages your brain to focus on dancing instead of dwelling in the stressful events at work, thus achieving the effect of reliving stress.

What we feel is what our minds choose to focus on.

The last but probably the greatest benefit of learning dancing…..
“You Never Know When You Will Need It.”
Recently I went for a birthday party where there were about 20 people. We played a simple game where the loser will have to do a random forfeit which is suggested by the participants. Guess what….the forfeit was to DANCE… well she made a little fool out of herself and we applauded for her courage of being sporting. Imagine what would have happened if she learnt a dance…..similarly we would have applauded….but for her talents. |
