Take the Lead Movie Review

This is a very inspiring movie that tells of how a ballroom teacher manages to convert a group of impatient, hot tempered students who feels that they are the outcaste of the society into proud teenagers who will then lead a more purposeful life. It reminds me of Coach Carter who did something really similar to except that the main theme revolves around ballroom dancing rather than basketball.

Pierre Dulaine is ballroom teacher who teaches people of relatively high social status and affluence. However, when he chanced upon a teenager who was smashing a car window he was determined to help and change the life of the teenager forever.

There is one particular scene of the story where Pierre Dulaine was summoned to the meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association. The school’s main focus is probably teaching those who are willing to learn and segregate those who are unwilling to learn so that they do not affect the learning environment of the school. Dulaine was challenged by one teacher who claimed that his teaching methods are impractical because considering the background of these children, its highly unlikely that they will be doing ballroom dancing any time within the next 5 years. In my opinion it is the act of teaching the children dancing that actually gave them a feel of how it is to be respected as a ballroom dancer and this subconsciously taught them that they can have everything that they want as long as they work for it.

I was wondering if there are any teachers or principals out there who are watching this movie. It would probably have given them an insight as to how to handle the problematic students in the school. The movie would have prompted them to change the approach if it is not working to help students change for the better. I would largely urge the teachers and parents to stop complaining about the caliber of the students and ask this question:

“What have I done for the kids?”

This would be a more empowering question and

One particular quote that I liked best is this:

To do anything is hard; it is easier to blame your father, your mother, the environment, the government, or the lack the money. Even if you do assign the blame, it does not make the problem go away.

Combined with the hip hop style into ballroom it reminds me of the UK salsa congress where Eddie the salsa freak and her partner danced salsa combined with a bit of popping, locking and breaking.

Take the lead is more than simply leading in a dance. It is about taking lead in one’s life and
