First Attempt on Hip-Hop Dancing Life as a student of Xenbar has always been entertaining and full of surprises. The series of public performances lined up in the May and June was really an eye-opener for most of the generally new students like me. Being a person who was seldom accustomed to performances on stage, the idea of performing a dance in public was quite intimidating for me. I have been learning salsa for about five months in Xenbar. Xenbar, as one of the top salsa dance schools in Singapore places the main emphasis on Salsa dancing. Although Xenbar also teaches Hip-hop, I have never attended any Hip-hop classes in Xenbar before. In fact, I was never exposed to Hip-hop dancing throughout my entire life. The idea of performing Hip-hop in public has never crossed my mind either.
Life is always unpredictable. Just one day before the actual Hip-hop performance, the performance classes, inclusive of many beginner students like me, was informed of the performance and was told to choreograph and execute the dance moves in order to stage a performance the following night. Most of us were wondering: Can we really do it? First of all, most of us do not have any dancing background, not to mention such an energetic and lively dance like Hip-hop. To be able to perform an entirely foreign dance within a day simply seems impossible. However, knowing that we cannot simply just back out from the performance, we tried our best to perfect whatever we have choreographed throughout the night. I will always remember that very night when most of us were trying to execute the choreographed moves. Most of us simply look awkward and out-of -place as we are not Hip-hop dancers. We had much fun teasing one another’s funny moves as we went through the choreography again and again until we are very sure of the sequence. It was a long, stressful and tiring night for the performance class but there were many unforgettable moments; the encouragement from the instructor and fellow team members to strive the team to go on in order to stage a successful performance the following night. Finally, the time came for us to perform. We made use of whatever available time we have to rehearse the dance moves before making our way to Double O, a popular discotheque to stage our performance on Hip-hop dancing. Throughout the performance, I was nervous and shaky but I hid the nervous expression from the numerous audiences watching us. The performance went on smoothly. Although it was a short dance performance, it seems like ages to me before the performance finally ended. There goes my first ever Hip-hop performance in my life. It was overall an enjoyable and unforgettable experience. |
